I must tip my hat to the developers of Ubuntu.

My wife’s friend Michael isn’t quite computer literate. He was complaining to my wife about how he always got viruses. She told him how we don’t since we use Linux instead of Windoze. He didn’t understand how you can use a computer without Windoze on it. She told him we would give him an install disk so he can try it out. I handed him the disk and told him to follow instructions.

About an hour later he called, asking where all his stuff was. He had successfully installed Linux without any help, but was confused by the default empty desktop, since the installer told him it had imported all his crap. I pointed him over the phone to the “Places” menu, and he got it. He wasn’t online last I heard because he had to find out what his grandpa’s router’s WPA key was, but other than those tiny hitches, someone who didn’t even know you could replace Windoze managed to install Ubuntu with no help!

If you have a good connection and a burner, why not download Ubuntu yourself, and give it a try too? If you don’t have broadband or a burner, Ubuntu will even send you a free install CD! You can run it side by side with Windoze, and delete it if you don’t like it after a week or two, so you have nothing to lose, but a great deal of frustration.

Catching up

I know I haven’t posted in almost two years… it has been a busy two years. I am going to try to get into a schedule of posting at least twice a week from now on… if a week goes by without at least a post feel free to email me and demand that I write something!

I have switched my blog from TextPattern over to WordPress. I like TxP but WP 2.7 was just too sweet to pass over. I changed my theme in the process, but may port my LCARS theme over to WP at some point in the future. We’ll see.

Things with the wife are going well. We had some issues early in our marriage, but I think all married people do. We’ve gotten past that though. Yay!

I am not working at Home Depot anymore… I haven’t since June of 2007. Since August of 2007 I have been working at WalMart. I am an instock supervisor there now, which means that I am in charge of the people who unload trucks and stock the shelves. It has it’s challenges but overall it is a job that I do quite well (I am told) and enjoy most days.

I haven’t had an internet connection for the last two years, other than on a crappy cell phone, and am finally getting involved in some of the sites I have been reading about. You can now find me on identica, last.fm, twitter, facebook, and myspace (which is really retweets of my identica posts). I don’t have much under any of these accounts as they are all fairly new but if you want to follow me, feel free.

For Christmas my wife got me a new laptop. It is a low-end Compaq, but is the first new computer I have ever owned, and after installing Ubuntu on it, I have had no problems with its speed. It is nice being able to click the Firefox logo and have the window open without having time for a coffee break. I still don’t have internet (because I refuse to do business with the only company that provides broadband in my area) but am stealing borrowing my neighbor’s wifi.

Hopefully I will remember to use that borrowed wifi to post another entry within the next few days.

I know, I know, it’s been a while. Seems like it always is, but my life doesn’t leave much to blog about that anyone would really care to read. I have been trying for a while to move from a personal diary type blog to more computer and political stuff that would interest a wider assortment of people, but I haven’t really done much on the computer other than keep up with the latest RSS feeds (I’m back to using Google Reader but planning my own aggregator) and my email.

I saw Spiderman 3 the other day and while it was quite good for a comic book movie, I was let down. I guess I have never really been a comic book type of guy, though.

Work is fun. I love being a cashier! I get paid the same money, but don’t have to do any work any more. I hope to be a head cashier soon, but the two people who have say about that both dislike me so I doubt that will happen any time soon. Maybe if I apply at Lowes…

I realized something odd a few minutes ago. When I was using a Mac, which is famous for having a great interface, I spent most of my time (other than that spent in Camino) in a terminal window issuing textual commands. Now that I am using Linux, which is famous for seeming to require knowing how to use a terminal, I find that I am using the graphical interface more and more. I used have Vim open at all times, and used it for all my text editing, now I am using Bluefish and Screem. I barely even touch Vim any more! Has Linux really gotten that good?

God, though, do I miss Camino.

Upgrade to Ubuntu

I apologize for my prolonged absence. My monitor developed a short, and seeing as how I have (had) a first-generation iMac, lack of a monitor meant that I had to replace the entire computer. I finally got an old HP from my step-mom, on which I am now running Ubuntu Linux. It had been so long since I used Linux, I forgot how much I love all the freedom that comes with it. It seems slightly slow due to the age of the computer, but it is still better than my aging iMac. After having converted three or four people to Ubuntu, it is about time that I got to give it a go. I don’t think I will be looking back.

I am working days at work again, sort of. I work 0400—1300 Monday, Thursday, and Friday, and 0800—1730 on Friday and Saturday. I am glad to have a decent schedule again. The overnight freight crew does seem to be having quite a bit of difficulty without me, though.

After the release of Wordpress 2.1, with all its improvements in database performance, I am thinking of switching to WP again. Perhaps this time it will be for good. The TextPattern community seems to have stagnated somewhat. The biggest news to come out of TxP lately has all been commercial products that would be nice to have, but that I don’t feel justify paying for when WP is completely free (free as in speech and free as in beer).

Promoting Linux

Most Linux news sites (OS News, Linux.com, NewsForge, etc) run a couple of articles per week on how you can help to promote use of Linux on desktop systems. My simple advice, refuse to do any tech support for people using Windoze, other than installing Linux. Since most tech geeks are their family’s IT support, if more people refused to help troubleshoot viruses and malware on Windoze the unwashed masses would have little choice other than to either migrate to Linux or put up with Indian tech support hotlines.

Slightly cruel but should be effective.
