New apartment

I was really going to keep my blog updated. Really.

But instead I got carried away sending updates to identi.ca. I put the small things in there as they happen, and since most of my blog entries are a bunch of small things put together that kills most of the point of posting.

Sorry.

However, I have something large enough to be worth an entire entry… the wife and I moved! We are now living in Saginaw, not too far from where I work. Her sister had been living with us, and sharing a car with us. We lived 18 kilometers from work, and since we both work in the same building, but different shifts, this wound up being two or three round trips a day. Needless to say, gas was financially killing us. She got her own apartment a couple of weeks ago, walking distance from work. The wife and I got our own apartment a week later (last Friday) 5 km away. We are still in the precess of getting all our crap moved over here (we drive a Kia Rio and can’t afford a moving truck yet) and are surrounded by boxen, but we love it.

On Tuesday, Evan’s grade went on a field trip to the Dallas World Aquarium. The wife and I tagged along as chaperones, taking care of a small group of kids. Despite my normal antipathy towards children, we actually had a great deal of fun!

Before we went to the aquarium, we took a side trip to Linda Spurlock park, where the kids played a while and ate lunch. Then they all boarded a bus and we headed to Dallas. I normally can’t stand Dallas, and refuse to go there even to see a good show (I do plan on making an exception for when the Nekromantix play with the Reverend Horton Heat on 25 July) but was willing to do so to hang out with the wife and kid.

When we got there, we hit a slight snag; parking was $5 and for some reason the parking lot was one of the ones where you have to stuff bills in a box. We rarely if ever carry cash, and this is the first place I have seen in several years where I couldn’t use plastic. Fortunantally, one of the other parents had some extra money and gave it to us. It would normally be embarrassing to have to even ask, but I refuse to feel like a fool when they are the ones who won’t take my Visa.

Jennifer took the camera I got her for X-Mas, and took several pictures. She created a gallery of her favorites; I just uploaded the entite mess to flickr. Feel free to browse and enjoy.

Today is my wife’s twenty fifth birthday! I am taking a four day weekend from work so I can spend some time with her — due to my odd work schedule I spend most of my time either at work or asleep. We haven’t done much together today, as her friend took her out for a birthday lunch/shopping trip she hasn’t been home, but we are going to do something cool later.

Days off

I’ve had a busy few days. I was off yesterday and today, but my mother got a citation from the city for a barn in her backyard that is about to fall over, that someone called in. While the code compliance person was at her house, she noticed a bunch of sticks and branches all over the yard, and cited her on those too. The wife, the kids and I have been helping her get her yard cleaned up to avoid a big ticket.

The kids (Jennifer’s brothers) are out of school this week for spring break, but their mother doesn’t like having them around so they are spending the week with the wife and I. I love the little boogers and enjoy having them around, but after a while they do start getting in the way. Perhaps if/when we move somewhere larger so they can have their own bedroom it won’t be a problem, but for now they are sleeping in our room with us.

I am getting quite a kick out of MC Hawking lately.

Catching up

I know I haven’t posted in almost two years… it has been a busy two years. I am going to try to get into a schedule of posting at least twice a week from now on… if a week goes by without at least a post feel free to email me and demand that I write something!

I have switched my blog from TextPattern over to WordPress. I like TxP but WP 2.7 was just too sweet to pass over. I changed my theme in the process, but may port my LCARS theme over to WP at some point in the future. We’ll see.

Things with the wife are going well. We had some issues early in our marriage, but I think all married people do. We’ve gotten past that though. Yay!

I am not working at Home Depot anymore… I haven’t since June of 2007. Since August of 2007 I have been working at WalMart. I am an instock supervisor there now, which means that I am in charge of the people who unload trucks and stock the shelves. It has it’s challenges but overall it is a job that I do quite well (I am told) and enjoy most days.

I haven’t had an internet connection for the last two years, other than on a crappy cell phone, and am finally getting involved in some of the sites I have been reading about. You can now find me on identica, last.fm, twitter, facebook, and myspace (which is really retweets of my identica posts). I don’t have much under any of these accounts as they are all fairly new but if you want to follow me, feel free.

For Christmas my wife got me a new laptop. It is a low-end Compaq, but is the first new computer I have ever owned, and after installing Ubuntu on it, I have had no problems with its speed. It is nice being able to click the Firefox logo and have the window open without having time for a coffee break. I still don’t have internet (because I refuse to do business with the only company that provides broadband in my area) but am stealing borrowing my neighbor’s wifi.

Hopefully I will remember to use that borrowed wifi to post another entry within the next few days.
