I know, I know, it’s been a while. Seems like it always is, but my life doesn’t leave much to blog about that anyone would really care to read. I have been trying for a while to move from a personal diary type blog to more computer and political stuff that would interest a wider assortment of people, but I haven’t really done much on the computer other than keep up with the latest RSS feeds (I’m back to using Google Reader but planning my own aggregator) and my email.

I saw Spiderman 3 the other day and while it was quite good for a comic book movie, I was let down. I guess I have never really been a comic book type of guy, though.

Work is fun. I love being a cashier! I get paid the same money, but don’t have to do any work any more. I hope to be a head cashier soon, but the two people who have say about that both dislike me so I doubt that will happen any time soon. Maybe if I apply at Lowes…

I realized something odd a few minutes ago. When I was using a Mac, which is famous for having a great interface, I spent most of my time (other than that spent in Camino) in a terminal window issuing textual commands. Now that I am using Linux, which is famous for seeming to require knowing how to use a terminal, I find that I am using the graphical interface more and more. I used have Vim open at all times, and used it for all my text editing, now I am using Bluefish and Screem. I barely even touch Vim any more! Has Linux really gotten that good?

God, though, do I miss Camino.

A horrible night

Jennifer’s best friend had a baby a couple of nights ago. Last night, Jennifer was at the hospital with her, and I had to be at work this morning at four. I couldn’t sleep, and having nothing else to do, I went up to work and slept in my car in the parking lot to make sure I would be on time to work.

A couple of minutes past midnight, and about an hour after I went to sleep, Patrick (one of the garden managers) knocked on my window. He and two other guys were supposed to come in and restock all the pallets outside. The two others didn’t show, though, and company policy dictates that no one can be in the store alone. He pointed out that if I clocked in I would get to go home at 08:30 instead of 13:00, which is nice since this is my weekend. I agreed, and set to work getting all the shelves full.

At one point, I had to put up three pallets of mowers that had been sitting back in receiving, that were about three meters tall each. The first two went up without a hitch, but the third one wound up whacking one of the pipes for the sprinkler system, unleashing an ungodly downpour across the entire garden department. Picture the images you see from hurricane coverage on the news, except that the water has been stagnating for six years and smells like a latrine. Not fun. Read the rest of this entry »
