A hell of a night

I have heard a rumor that makes me happy! Supposedly, Valarie, the gal I am filling in for, will be coming back to our store in four days. If that is the case, I will be back on nights in about a week. I sure hope so — I am really freaking tired of second shift. I don’t get any support from management — in fact, sometimes it seems they are intentionally trying to keep me from making sure all my work gets done.
I am supposed to have 8-12 people a night. My entire crew is six people, and they all want days off so I don’t get all of them at once. I have been trying for about two months to get management to let me hire more people. They finally let me hire four about a week ago. Three of them passed the drug test and background check, which came as a shock to me, as normally one in ten passes. Two of the new people started tonight.

Tonight we had two trucks. We normally have one a night, so that is already a pretty tough night for us. I usually borrow people from other areas of the store when I’m short handed, but tonight I had a total of five people and they didn’t see any reason I should have to borrow anyone. However, new people aren’t quite good enough yet to count. They don’t know what they’re doing. And worse, they keep asking the experienced people what to do  and how to do it. That means that once you balance it out I really only had two or three people tonight. We are supposed to have all our freight off the truck(s) and on the floor when third shift gets in at ten. We didn’t finish unloading the trucks until 9:30, then we had to take lunch. So needless to say, it was a hell of a night.

I am really, really, really looking forward to going back to night shift.
